Where there's a will, there's a Waldo!

The Waldo was built during the Great Depression by Carroll T. Cooney with the help of many local families. Despite hardships, the community recognized the importance of a place to gather, to entertain, and to dream as a means to recover from turbulent times. A resilient, undaunted, and hopeful community, and one we’re proud to be part of today.

At this time in The Waldo’s history, the support of all those who have come forward to help us on the path to reopening - volunteers and donors; foundations and businesses - has put us in a position of strength in these times. Thanks to you, we can carefully and cautiously continue to work and plan, respecting the challenges of current COVID-19 advisories and restrictions.

As a team working remotely, The Waldo’s steadfast Board and I - along with invaluable technical and grant writing volunteer advisors - are fundraising and preparing the technology needed to reopen The Waldo later this year. We’re reviewing our priorities regularly and practicing Yankee thrift wherever we can to ensure the theatre’s opening with the essentials in place.

Spring is a busy grant application season, and we are meeting deadlines for both capital and program grants. We have recently been awarded a significant grant to produce an event celebrating Maine’s Bicentennial this fall. Plans for concerts and performances in November and December continue to move forward as of this update.

Our April 7 Volunteer Work Morning is postponed until we hear from Governor Mills that it is safe for groups of 10 or more people to gather once again. In the meantime, individuals who have offered to work on building projects are limiting groups to three people in the space at one time and using appropriate health and safety precautions as called for by the CDC.

You and the entire Waldo Community are at the heart of everything we do. We wish you and your loved ones safety and peace as you weather these rough seas. We will continue to keep you updated on our progress and cannot wait to welcome you back to The Waldo as soon as possible.

There will always be music and laughter. There will always be dreams and joy. Soon we will share these together again.

The very best from me and mine to you and yours,

Kate Fletcher
